Community Kitchen

Feed newberg

What is it?

Feed Newberg is a non-profit that offers community support in the form of a community kitchen located in Northside Community Church and focused on serving healthy food, and offering essential services like showers and laundry to those in need.

How?

Northside Staff and local volunteers will prepare weekend meals in our commercial kitchen that we will offer to anyone in need. With the support of Community Wellness Collective we will offer access to our laundry and shower services while meals are being offered.

The houseless & low-income community in Newberg is facing a significant challenge in gaining access to food and food services. One in eight people face hunger and must choose between food, rent, prescriptions etc. 25% of people reporting food insecurity may not qualify for assistance programs.

Thanks to the support of local Newberg churches people needing access to food are able to get it Monday through Friday. There is still a gap over the weekend and Feed Newberg Community Kitchen is hoping to serve nightly meals on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. We are determined to improve access to food and food services. Feed Newberg is a non-profit that is committed to serving healthy food, at a consistent time, in a consistent location to those facing food scarcity in our community.

the
vision

What does it look like to be Jesus through a kitchen? Through the act of a shared meal and a need met. Relaying value and compassion through community. Gathering around a meal and listening to one another’s story. Offering love and support during our time together is just the beginning. We hope to be a consistent voice of hope and love.

What’s next?

We are now done with the construction in our kitchen which means we are ready to use our fully functioning commercial kitchen to launch our nightly weekend meals. Now in process of getting officially licensed and finding the best person to be a kitchen manager, we can begin to organize volunteers, create healthy menus, and open our doors Friday through Sunday for nightly meals.

How do I get involved?

A community kitchen takes community getting involved to thrive. We are continuing to raise funds to be sustainable. We’re close to our fundraising goal, and funds are always welcome and needed in our journey to feed our community.  Other ways people can be involved are:

  • Prayer
  • Fundraising
  • Marketing
  • Business Consulting
  • Event Planning
  • Community Networking

Now that the kitchen is completed, our needs have expanded to include a kitchen manager, volunteer team leaders, and individuals interested in cooking and providing meals.

What’s the plan?

As we launch our weekend nightly meals, we’re excited to open our doors to Providence, who has a teaching kitchen model, based out of Milwaukie, where doctors can refer patients to receive cooking classes that will support and prevent chronic illnesses.

We’ll also be partnering with non-profits and churches in the community to staff the kitchen with a team of rotating volunteers. Perishable food will provided in partnership with YCAP, local farmers, and other food banks in the community in order to provide healthy options for those facing food insecurity in Newberg.

It's a team effort!
